Actually, he does turn on a dime. Delayed shock, remember? At first, the joy of reuniting with his partners was sustaining him, and then he was maintaining a facade for Rose. Once he was alone with the Doctor, and started talking about what happened, that's when the dam burst.
Loved this sentence.
That one was inspired by the Greek myth of Baucis and Philemon, a devoted married couple who turned into a pair of intertwined trees when they died. It's not quite a parallel to my story, but I liked the image of a hug that strong and long-lasting.
