Thank you! I missed some of the New Who during its initial run, and filled in the gaps out of order. So it took a while for me to realize how much crucial plot and character development takes place in the gap between "The Doctor Dances" and "Boom Town".

I'm very fond of "darker, more complex", and I think it's an important part of doing justice to the characters. There's a wonderful quote about the impossible vs. the implausible in one of G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown stories. In fact, it's sufficiently wonderful, that I think I will make it the subject of its own post. But the point I want to make is that even an adult who has lived a fairly mundane life will have darkness and complexity beneath the surface personality. And I think that any story that isn't pure froth should at least hint at that.
