At the best of times, the Doctor can be frightening to deal with, even if he's being friendly. It might be easier for some people if he looked alien, and had tentacles and two heads.
Judging how he behaved before and after the rescue, I can guess what he was like on the trip back to Earth. No "TARDIS 101", no "It's okay -- I'm taking you home", no condolences on the tragic loss of their friends. I suspect there was a lot of crowing about how clever he was, combined with some speculation about the origin and nature of those very interesting entities.
