Title: The Greater Sin
Characters: Tenth Doctor, other characters
Genre: episode-related, drabble
Length: 100 words
Rating: all ages
Spoilers: Spoilers for "Water of Mars"
Summary: He can't decide which is the greater sin.
Disclaimer: The sandbox belongs to RTD and the BBC. I'm just playing here, in the corner, making little sand-TARDISes. Not making any money, not asserting any claims.
A/N: Another reaction drabble. Unbetad. DO NOT READ if you haven't watched Waters of Mars.

Stupid humans! He likes humanity as a species. They are adventurous, resourceful, and endlessly curious. But some humans just don't measure up. Like Mia. He rescues her in his magnificent TARDIS, and takes her home on the same day she left Mars. What does the foolish girl do? Runs away without even a 'thanks for the lift, Doctor'.

Still, it's Adelaide who really infuriates him. All that intelligence, courage, and potential, and she wastes it. How dare she throw away the life he so generously gave her? Ingratitude and arrogance -- and he can't decide which is the greater sin.

concerning arrogance pot kettle! He has the worst case of hubris. He thinks he's God. Everything's about him!

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. It's all about him and what he wants. "Pride goeth before destruction..."

Yeah, that would be about the blinkered state of mind he'd be in right about then . . .

He hasn't gone quite as far as to call her attitude blasphemy, but it doesn't seem far away.

I can see that quite clearly, yes.

(I still happen to think that the problem is effectively a form of nervous breakdown rather than hubris, but perhaps the psychology of a Time Lord works rather differently that way than a human’s? Reminds me almost of what the Doctor said way back in Season Three about the Master.)

I rather think both things are true. The hubris is a symptom of the nervous breakdown--the last defence mechanism his subconscious could find to keep him from collapsing into a jibbering pile of goo or taking a deliberately suicidal action (as opposed to his usual casual death-seeking behaviors).

That’s probably the truth of it, yes.

I'm not really sure how to separate his psychology from his behavior, especially since he is an alien. His psychology must be different from ours, if only because he has different brain functions and different senses than humans do.

Just saw Waters of Mars (thank you YouTube), and then read your drabbles. You've really nailed it. The Doctor was f*ing scary at the end there.

Wasn't he, though? Lines from that last scene keep going through my head.

"The laws of time are mine, and they will obey me!"
“Is there anything you can't do?” “Not any more.”
"The Time Lord Victorious is wrong!" "That's for me to decide."
